I have never been a morning person. I love staying up really late and sleeping in. Since I homeschooled for 8 years I got really spoiled. The older girls were always in charge of making breakfast, and they really liked getting up early and getting a jump start on all their schoolwork and practicing. I always got the younger kids ready for the day, then we'd get chores done before we would start school.
Fast forward to now.......I have 5 kids in school. I still love staying up really late, but I want to spend as much time with my kids before they go to school. I love to make them a hot healthy breakfast and talk a bit before they head off.
Dave has to leave about a half hour before the kids do, so we read scriptures at 7:30. Dave always tries to make it fun to keep the younger kids interested. Today he told them we were going to do popcorn reading. One person reads to a certain point then they call the next person to start reading right at the point that they stopped (could be in the middle of a sentence). It made everyone pay attention and they were giggling several times. It's always great to have your own personal seminary teacher!
After family prayer I do the school girl's hair and the older girls bathe the little girls and get them ready for the day - we've swapped roles from our homeschooling days.
Corina is always chomping at the bit........she obsesses over being on time. We've never been late for school, but she gets really nervous anyway!
I will always enjoy staying up late. I will never love getting up early, but as I looked over at all my kids sitting around the table this morning -- Tanner cuddled up in his blanket, Akayla helping Mars cut up her french toast, Corina and Adri giggling about the verse they just read, Elli shoving food in her mouth and trying to climb on the table, and Annalisa trying to read along....................I wouldn't trade this time for anything!
good things:
mornings
french toast made with fresh homemade whole wheat bread
strawberry smoothies

So fun. I love popcorn reading but I totally forgot about it til reading your blog. We did it with the kids at school all the time and they loved it. I am with you on the morning thing, but I can't stay up super late anymore. My kids have to catch the bus at 7:30 and so we have to get up and move, but they don't want to anymore. I'll have to come up with something fun to get them going. Popcorn reading might help!
That's so cute. I love to stay up late too. Remember when you, Brandon, and I would have scripture study with dad in the morning... we would sit over the heater in the winter and have eggo waffles. Good times :)
I think all of us like to stay up late and sleep in. I used to be the opposite, but my metabolism has changed a little. Anyway, all your kids are so precious, and it makes me happy that they all are such best friends and love to spend time together and help each other. I wish I had my own personal seminary teacher, too! Not that Dad isn't great, but lately, Family Home Evening has become more like Family home "lecture." Now, go get some sleep!
Yes I love staying up late too! I have trained Henrik now to sleep in a little so I can, which is great until he has to start school. Anyway, I do agree that making some sacrifices once in a while do bring great joy.
Daniel is also very good at doing lessons and reading short and interesting. It's nice even though Henrik at this point just crawls all over us. Church is the same.
Thanks for the reminder to see the good in life.
Totally not a morning person either and therefore I'm so impressed with all you do. Oatmeal or eggo waffles is as fancy as I get. I always think I should be more organized the night before but it doesn't happen. One of these days I'll be more on the ball. Thanks for your inspiration!
Sounds like a perfect morning. It always amazes me that just looking at my kids can take all the negativity away and remind me I am exactly where I want to be. I will have to give the popcorn reading a try.
Sounds like you have a great morning routine! My poor kids get cold cereal most days. :o) I love the popcorn reading idea - we're going to have to try it tonight when we read scriptures!
