We had 2 reasons to induce labor this time around - gestational diabetes, and Akayla going to college (her move-in-date was Friday and I was induced Wednesday).
Because I have my babies with no pain medicine I don't think it's very fun to push out a 9 pound baby (I've done it, and it really isn't fun).
I was told to call the hospital at 4:45 a.m. to see if they had a room available.
They told me to call back at 5:30.
At 5:30 they said they would call me when they were ready.
They finally called at 6:30 and said to be there by 7:00.
We got in and they set me up.
Unfortunately I wasn't dilated AT ALL, so my midwife wanted to start with pitocin.
Dang!
After about 6 hours and contractions coming every 3-5 minutes I thought for sure I was dilated to at least a 3 or 4, but I still wasn't dilated at all.
My midwife was starting to get concerned because the doctor on call was starting to talk about c-section. They said they'd give me a few more hours and then I would have to have a c-section if I still wasn't progressing at all.
My midwife agreed to break my water even though I wasn't dilated, and luckily I immediately opened up a bit after that.
My nurse suggested I turn to my side and see if that would help anything.
Immediately my contractions were extremely painful.
After about a half hour I was dilated to a 7-8.
I was having tons of back labor, and I was so worried that I would have to experience those horrible painful contractions for a few more hours.
I kept asking Dave to remind me why I don't like epidurals.
My nurse also suggested I try getting up on my hands and knees (bless her - she really was a great nurse!) to take some of the pressure off my back.
It really helped, and after just a few contractions I was ready to push.
Normally it takes me just a couple of pushes and baby is here, but this time was horrible.
I'll spare the gory details here, but finally Mason showed his face - sunny side up (posterior) and was in my arms.
That was not fun, and I'm so glad it's over.
And he was worth all the pain!
